City of Sunbury to Receive Flood Mitigation State Grant to Replace Flood Wall, Culver Says
SUNBURY – The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) approved the city of Sunbury’s $423,677 funding request through the state’s Flood Mitigation Program, to repair and replace the flood wall along Sunbury’s waterfront.

“The flood wall is one of the most important structures in Sunbury, as it protects the city from the Susquehanna River when the water rises,” Rep. Lynda Schlegel Culver (R-Northumberland/Snyder) said. “Residents, businesses and property owners rely heavily on the wall to protect our city, and it is crucial that it be replaced and stabilized to ensure maximum protection.”

In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed a wall in the city of Sunbury along the Susquehanna River. The WPA wall is found on the river side of the Army Corp of Engineers flood wall which was constructed in 1951. The river side of the WPA flood wall was constructed with a series of hand-laid stone walls that protect the subsoils from eroding. Many portions of the wall are beginning to be undermined by the erosive impact of Lake Augusta. These stone walls have been repaired numerous times over the years and are in need of replacement. The city plans to replace the current stone with Redi Rock to stabilize the wall and prevent any additional erosion and wall failure. The total project cost is $498,446.

“The original flood wall has protected the residents of Sunbury for many decades,” added Sen. John R. Gordner (R-27). “By utilizing these essential funds to stabilize it, they will have peace of mind for many years to come. Rep. Culver should be lauded for her staunch advocacy for this crucial project.”
